The Sun: Nature's Compass and Clock
The Sun plays a vital role in bird migration. Its position in the sky helps birds determine direction throughout their journey. At the same time, sunlight regulates their internal biological clock, allowing them to recognize the time of day and adjust their navigation accordingly.
Birds also detect seasonal changes based on the duration of daylight and darkness. These changing day lengths automatically prepare them for the long migrations that are essential for their survival.
The Stars: A Night Sky Filled with Directions
Many birds migrate during the night. Nocturnal birds identify the central point around which the night sky appears to rotate. In the northern hemisphere, they use the star located close to this point, commonly known as Polaris, or the North Star, along with surrounding star patterns to navigate.
By recognizing these rotational patterns in the night sky, birds determine direction and stay on their migratory route.
Earth's Magnetic Field: The Invisible Map
Birds are also believed to sense Earth’s magnetic field. Their eyes contain light-sensitive proteins called Cryptochromes, in the retina. These proteins contain molecules such as flavin adenine dinucleotide (FAD) and the amino acid tryptophan. Under normal conditions, these molecules remain in a stable state. However, when blue light strikes them, electrons are transferred between the molecules, creating pairs of linked electrons with specific spin states.
Earth’s magnetic field slightly influences these spin states, altering the chemical reactions within cryptochromes. Birds are believed to detect these tiny changes and convert them into visual patterns in their brains, helping them determine direction during migration.
Studies also suggest that birds’ beaks may contain ferromagnetic-like particles, possibly made of magnetite, which can also respond to Earth’s magnetic field.
Wind and Smell: Nature's Invisible Road Signs
Wind does much more than simply push birds forward. Favorable winds help birds travel thousands of miles while using less energy, making their flights faster and more efficient.
Wind also carries environmental odors across long distances. Birds use their highly developed sense of smell to recognize these scents, helping them identify different locations because each region has its own unique vegetation and environmental smell.
Smell becomes especially important during long migrations where there are few visual landmarks, particularly while flying over oceans or other large bodies of water.
Some birds, such as the kiwi and the Turkey vulture, have an exceptionally well-developed sense of smell that allows them to locate food from great distances.
Threats to bird migration
For millions of years, birds relied on these signs to migrate successfully. However, a new challenge emerged during industrialization.
As cities expanded and populations grew, skyscrapers became necessary to save space. Many modern buildings began using large glass facades instead of traditional walls to maximize natural daylight and enhance their appearance.
Unfortunately, these glass surfaces often reflect the sky, trees, and surrounding landscape. Birds mistake these reflections for the real environment and fly directly into the glass at full speed.
As a result, an estimated 365 million to 1 billion birds die every year from building collisions in the United States alone.
Artificial lighting creates another major problem
Bright city lights can make natural celestial cues, such as stars, less visible and can disrupt birds' circadian rhythms. In some cases, birds mistake artificial lights for navigation signals, causing them to stray from their migration routes.
The impact can be devastating. In 2023, more than 1,000 birds died in a single night after colliding with a brightly lit convention center in Chicago.
How Can We Help Protect Migrating Birds?
- Design glass windows with patterns or lines using oil-based print markers or simple soap markings.
- Apply colored tape to glass in a checkered pattern so birds can recognize it as a solid surface.
- Turn off unnecessary lights at night, especially during migration seasons.
- Use downward-facing streetlights to reduce unnecessary light reflection into the sky.
- Raise awareness about the light pollution and glass hazards.
