Why Do Leaves Change Color With the Seasons
Leaves are the beauty spots of nature. Around 3 million people from around the world visit Japan every year in the autumn to experience the colorful scenery created by maple, oak, and cherry trees. Not only in Japan, but also in countries such as the United States, Canada, China, South Korea, and European countries, wild trees are the biggest tourist attractions in autumn. But what actually makes this attraction possible?
The answer lies in the leaves themselves. The leaves contain different pigments that act like heroic characters, each playing their role according to the seasons.
To understand how these pigments work throughout the year, we first need to understand photosynthesis.
What is photosynthesis?
Photosynthesis is a process by which plants make their own food, and it also produces the oxygen that humans and animals need to breathe. This process takes place in the leaves with the help of a green pigment called Chlorophyll.
What is Chlorophyll and how does it perform photosynthesis?
Chlorophyll is the king of pigments, and it is responsible for photosynthesis. It absorbs red and blue light from the sun while reflecting green light, making most leaves appear green.
The roots absorb water from the soil and transport it to the leaves through the xylem, a plant tissue that carries water and minerals upward. The leaves also absorb carbon dioxide from the air through tiny openings called stomata.
Using the energy captured by chlorophyll from sunlight, the leaves combine water and carbon dioxide to produce glucose(food) for the plant and release oxygen into the air.
However, photosynthesis does not work at the same rate throughout the year. As the seasons change, the amount of sunlight and temperature also change, affecting how the tree produces food and how each leaf pigment performs its role.
Spring-Summer: Growing and Food Production
If the leaf is like a vehicle that carries out photosynthesis, the chlorophyll is its engine, and Sunlight is the fuel that powers it.
During the spring and summer, when sunlight is abundant, chlorophyll works actively, allowing the leaves to produce plenty of food. This is why the leaves remain lush and green during the growing season.
Autumn- Preparing for Winter
As Autumn Arrives, the days become shorter, and the temperature begins to fall. This means the tree receives less sunlight, which is required for photosynthesis.
At the same time, winter is approaching. During winter:
- Water in the soil may freeze, making it difficult for the roots to absorb.
- Cold temperatures can damage delicate leaf tissues.
- Keeping leaves alive requires a lot of energy.
So, instead of wasting energy on photosynthesis, the tree slows down that process. It breaks down chlorophyll and moves valuable nutrients from leaves into the trunk and roots, where they are stored until the spring. Once the nutrients have been recovered, the tree sheds its leaves to conserve water and survive the cold months.
Due to the breakdown of chlorophyll, carotenoids that are masked by chlorophyll begin to appear. Carotenoids absorb blue-green light and reflect vibrant yellow and orange colors.
In many tree species, another pigment called anthocyanin is also produced during autumn. Anthocyanins absorb certain blue-green wavelengths and reflect red, purple, and blue colors.
Both carotenoids and anthocyanins protect the leaves from sun damage, like soldiers, while the tree recovers nutrients from leaves before they fall.
Winter- Dormant Season
During winter, deciduous trees enter a survival state. Since most of their leaves have fallen, photosynthesis almost completely stops. The tree survives using the food stored in its trunk and roots during spring and summer.
In essence, a tree's seasonal survival strategy creates some of the world’s spectacular natural attractions.
Why do only some trees change color according to the seasons?
The color change of the leaves depends on the combination of genetics and environmental conditions of the plant. Trees that are in the same place may exhibit different colors because of genetic variance. On the other hand, trees with almost the same genetics may exhibit different colors because of the varied environmental conditions in different places.
However, the significant beauty of seasonal color changes in the leaves is mostly seen in temperate regions. The trees in tropical regions, such as palash, kusum, etc, also change colors according to the seasons. The strong chlorophyll presence in evergreen trees, such as pine, makes them almost green throughout the year.
Despite the beauty brought about by seasonal changes, the color change of leaves can sometimes indicate the presence of diseases or environmental stress, especially when discoloration appears with spots and is asynchronous with seasons.
Above all, the seasonal color change of trees is a fascinating scientific phenomenon. It also teaches us that change and adaptation are essential for survival.
